AI and Computer Assistance in Qualitative Software: The Case of QDA Miner
In recent years, the integration of generative AI features into qualitative analysis software has sparked both excitement and concern within the research community. However, the implementation of artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) techniques in qualitative software is not a recent phenomenon. As early as 2007, QDA Miner 3.0 introduced the first AI-driven feature with the Query-by-Example search tool. This was followed in 2011 with QDA Miner 4.0, which incorporated Cluster Extraction and the Code Similarity search features—both leveraging machine learning to help qualitative researchers manage larger datasets and achieve faster, more consistent coding.
This workshop will explore how these AI features were thoughtfully designed to assist rather than replace the researcher, aligning with methodological traditions in qualitative research. More advanced automation techniques, aimed at reducing manual intervention, were intentionally reserved for QDA Miner’s companion software, WordStat. This design approach recognizes the various epistemological positions and the varied needs of researchers working with different data types and research objectives.
During the session, we will:
- Demonstrate existing AI features in QDA Miner and discuss their practical applications.
- Discuss how these tools balance automation and researcher control, respecting qualitative traditions.
- Preview upcoming AI-driven features currently under development for QDA Miner.
- Engage participants in a dialogue about the role of AI in qualitative software, addressing opportunities, limitations, and ethical considerations.

Qualitative Data Analysis with MAXQDA
MAXQDA is an all-in-one software for qualitative and mixed methods data analysis. It offers a wide range of functionalities for engaging with your data, from manual coding and memoing through word-based searches to auto-coding and AI-assisted research. Which tools could be useful for your study and how? This session provides an overview and familiarizes participants with MAXQDA’s features for analyzing and interpreting qualitative data.
In this interactive session, we will explore how MAXQDA can enhance your research process by introducing you to its key functionalities. You will learn more about project setup, coding, and analyzing qualitative data. Through a step-by-step demonstration, we will cover the following topics:
- Getting Started with MAXQDA:
- Getting to know the interface and navigating the workspace.
- Setting up your first project: importing and organizing various data types, including text documents, PDFs, images, audio files, and more.
- Coding and Organizing Data:
- Understanding the purpose of coding in qualitative research and creating your own codes.
- Building a hierarchical code system to organize and categorize your data.
- Using manual, automated coding and AI-Assist features for identifying patterns and themes.
- Analyzing and Visualizing Data
- Using MAXQDA’s analytical tools to uncover trends, relationships, and emerging themes in your data.
- Visualizing your findings with tools like code matrices, word clouds, and concept maps.
- Reporting and Sharing Results
- Generating reports and sharing your findings with visualizations and organized documentation.
By the end of this session, you’ll have a solid foundation in MAXQDA’s features and practical skills to begin your own research project
Required resources:
Previous knowledge of MAXQDA is optional but not required. We encourage participants to bring their own computer with a working installation of MAXQDA 24 so that they can actively participate and follow along. Use the free trial version at maxqda.com/trial or reach out to the instructor to receive a license for the session.
